A Detail Report on the 2nd Edition of Arewa Youth Convention

The Arewa Youth Convention is a robust platform that effectively facilitates knowledge sharing & continuous interaction between aspiring entrepreneurs/leaders in Arewa and key industry players, mentors and other relevant stakeholders in the youth Sector; thus creating opportunities for Arewa youths & links to invaluable networks of people and resources. The AYC is convened by Khalifa Dankadai Company (KDC) Nigeria Limited together with its collaborators. 

The maiden edition of the AYC was launched last year at Bristol palace in partnership with Office of The Special Assistant to the President on Youth & Student Affairs and Nigeria Export Import (NEXIM) Bank; it was attended by high ranking delegations from Central Bank of Nigeria, Bank of Industry, Bank of Agriculture, Small & Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Economic & Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), USAID Markets II, able representations from governments of the 19 northern states, youth groups, other MDAs and National & International development organisations; as the event was themed ’’Nigeria, a land of opportunities’’ (kindly check

The second edition was held at Fabs event centre, in collaboration with Truth events, and coordinated by Bells events. The convention was graced by His Royal Highness Muhammad Sanusi II who was ably represented by Mai Girma Bunun Kano Alhaji Umar Sanusi Bayero, Senior Special Assistant to the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria on National Social Investments Programs Barrister Ismaeel Ahmad, Kano State Government delegation which was led by Kano State Honourable Commissioner of Finance Hon. Aminu Mukhtar DanAmu who was accompanied by Special Advisor to the Kano State Governor on Media Salihu Tanko Yakasai & Senior Special Assistant to Kano State Governor on Youth Empowerment Hon. Adamu Mukhtar together with many other aides to His Excellency the Governor of Kano State, the Director General of Katsina State Investment Promotion Agency Honourable Ibrahim Tukur Jikamshi, the program coordinator of Northwest Entrepreneurship Development Center Mr. Samuel Adebayo, the Managing Director of Grassroots microfinance Bank Hajiya Farida Tahir, Northwest zonal Coordinator of Small & Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) Alhaji Ahmad Madaki Muhammad, representatives from United bank for Africa (UBA) and many other government officials, Academicians, Technocrats and heads of relevant stakeholder organizations.

The 2nd Edition of Arewa Youth Convention was a glamorous and stylish event, with a significant and captivating Theme: “Events and lifestyle industry in perspective.” The event of grandeur was convened by the noble and reputable Khalifa Dankadai Company (KDC), in collaboration with The Truth Events, and aptly coordinated by Bells Nigeria at Fabs event centre in the street of Magajin Rumfa in the city of Kano.

The event was ushered by a Red carpet Interview where dignitaries, participants and invited guests were interviewed. The Event witnessed a massive turnout of participants and dignitaries. At about 7:40pm the hall was almost filled up. At Exactly 7:50pm, everyone was set and all rise to show spirit of nationalism for the Nigerian National Anthem. An opening prayer was carried out by Hon Ibrahim Garba and then a welcome address by Sadique Jibril of Truths Events. Mr Sadique wholeheartedly welcomed everyone and prayed for a successful and impactful program.

And just after the welcome address by Mr Sadique, the KDC Projects Coordinator I person of Abdulhalim Sanusi got to the podium to deliver an opening Remark. He spoke about the KDC, The humanitarian and developmental services they render, their achievements and the strategies they use in solving and proffering lasting solutions to societal problems. Mr. Abdulhalim also made it clear in the course of his speech that the KDC had been helping communities, societies, and young Entrepreneurs for almost a decade now. He also spoke about Truth events, the company that co-convened the convention, an upcoming event planning company which is set to be the next big thing. He also spoke about bells events, an events and lifestyle platform that coordinated the convention. He also highlighted the aims and objectives of the Arewa Youth convention which he said, the main aim of the convention is to facilitate a platform for capacitating Arewa Youth.

And immediately after the wonderful opening Remark by Mr. Abdulhalim, a magnificent lawyer, motivational speaker, and politician in person of Barrister Ismail Ahmad was invited to deliver the keynote address. He is nobody but the senior special Adviser to the President on Social Investment Programmes; Barrister Ismail Ahmad. He started by confessing that he doesn't know what to say. Though caught impromptu, he lucidly explained the term youth and the term north. He then conjoined the terms together to be “Northern Youths.” However, Barrister expressed with melancholy the concept of Youths in the political palace and the way Youths are being underestimated and looked down upon, even though they are the backbone of every society. He then commended the KDC for their efforts in changing the perception about Youth in the Northern Region and urged the Northern Youths to be proactive and productive. He pleaded with the northern youths to shun envy and jealousy and imbibe the culture of oneness and unity. He closes his address by saying “LEADERSHIP IS NOT A POSITION BUT A QUALITY.”

Immediately after the keynote address by the motivational speaker, the next agenda was introduced; which was the most impactful segment of the event. Scholars and experts were invited to deliver papers on different vital topics. The fist paper was presented by Dr Adam Adieza of Dangote Business School, Bayero University Kano, on the topic “Who is an Entrepreneur?” As a Ph.D. holder of innovation and entrepreneurship, Dr Adam practically defined an entrepreneur; he identified some qualities an Entrepreneur must possess, the entrepreneurial mindset and how an Entrepreneur can develop himself and his business.

The second paper was on the topic “Importance of Collaboration and Lifelong Learning” and was presented by the mighty icon, former Director General Katsina state investment promotion council, Hon. Ibrahim Tukur Jikamshi. As a government official, Hon. Jikamshi began his presentation by observing the protocols, thanking the organisers of the event and then went straight to the business of the day (Paper Presentation).As an economist; he looked at collaboration as cooperation, alliance and partnership in business. On the lifelong learning, Hon. Jikamshi enjoined the youths and young entrepreneurs to always create personal time to grow, benefit from modern technology, accept criticism and should always have courage to do what they want to do.

“The younger generation needs us for mentoring, we are not here as posters or designs, we are here by necessity to guide.” The third paper presenter jokingly said. Mr Alwan Hassan, a quantity surveyor who went into banking practice. He had served several commercial banks in Nigeria and the apex bank of Nigeria; the central bank of Nigeria, before retiring in 2011. Mr Alwan was invited to deliver a paper on the topic “Access to finance; overcoming the major challenge facing start-ups and MSMEs in Arewa”. As a retired but not tired banker, he encouraged youths and young entrepreneurs to always develop a bankable business plan before establishing any form of business as the plan will help the firm in receiving grants and loans from banks and government interventions. He urged Youths and young Entrepreneurs to be updated with news and happenings around them. He then called on stakeholders, government officials and elites to encourage and support young entrepreneurs financially using himself as an example.

After the paper presentations, awards were presented to individual and firms for excelling in their various fields. Among the recipients of awards are: “Fabs Event Centre”, Alh. Abdulkarim (life style and hospitality services), Sadiya Umar, and Sadiya Mukhtar Yola (fashion design), honourable Munira Suleiman Tanimu (honorary award) just to mention but a Few.

And after entertainment and lots of refreshments, the climax of the event was reached when panel discussion began; Hon. Munira Suleiman, Sani Maikatanga, Hon. Salihu Tanko Yakasai, and Hon. Bashir Zuntu represented different youth groups on the panel, while Ali Amin and Miss Ameenah moderated the session. The panellists discussed “Collaboration and Competition Among Industry Players, Why the value of majority services in the industry are discounted and it's solution, The role of the contemporary media in branding and positioning events and lifestyle enterprises, and lastly the opportunities in events and lifestyle industry”.


There were numerous remarks from dignitaries and Invited guests like the Representative of the Emir of Kano who came with the goodwill message of the Emir to KDC and The entire Northern Youths; a closing remark by The National President of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in person of comrade Bello Shagari. Comrade Shagari proposed a project in partnership with the KDC foundation to empower thirty women with skills and capital to start up a business.

The successful event was closed by a closing prayer by the National Youth council of Nigeria, Kano representative.
