To us, volunteerism is the practice of providing time, energy, knowledge, and skills for the benefit of other people and causes rather than for financial benefits.

KDCF volunteer programme is designed to enable people like you to make optimum use of their time while serving a community in need. The programme is designed to provide a platform for all categories of people whose passion for community development is unmeasured.

There are different volunteer programmes at KDCF to choose from, each of the categories is carefully designed to enable prospective volunteers to choose what best fits their passion and schedule.

We do not just enroll you and let you be on your own, as a KDCF’s volunteer, we help you discover the best of you through trainings, use of standard reporting templates, and other relevant work tools and resources that will give you adequate capacity and competence to effectively volunteer with us and in any other place you may find yourself throughout your career.

What exactly does a KDCF Volunteer do?

  • Strengthening relationship between the foundation and Tsangaya communities through sensitization programmes as our volunteers are encouraged to actively participate in our program activities;
  • Empowering Tsangaya communities through mentorship, functional literacy and life skills development under the community library project;
  • Work with the KDCF team in creating integrated learning, skills development, and economic opportunities in rural communities to curb rural to urban Almajiri child migration.
  • Encourage others to join the volunteer programme; and
  • Promote sustainability of program impact and local community ownership of the project.

The beauty of this is that the volunteers themselves gain life-changing experiences and fulfilment, enhance their skills, and enrich their CVs. Now that’s a win-win situation!

Which Qualification do I need to possess be a Volunteer at KDCF?

There is no distinctive educational qualification requirement for a KDCF Volunteer. Each Volunteer activity is unique, and each has its own specific requirements. KDCF Volunteers are entrusted with a wide variety of roles and their volunteering locations range from capital cities to rural communities.

Generally, the minimum age for a KDCF Volunteer is 18 years and there is no upper age limit. A minimal level of secondary education, professional competency, and certain personal qualities are essential.

The specific requirements in terms of education, age, professional qualifications, and personal competencies are set out in individual descriptions of each assignment.

In keeping with the principles of capacity development, sustainability, and results-based management, KDCF Volunteer programme is guided through different reporting and engagement exercises

Selection process

All candidates undergo a selection process. We pay particular attention to the candidate’s track record, motivation, and attitude to volunteerism, as well as other personal qualities, such as team spirit and leadership, that are likely to make them successful in their assignments as Volunteers. Technical skills of the candidate are also considered especially where the candidate decided to be a tutor, mentor, or craftsperson.

Your rights as a KDCF volunteer

It is important to note that as a volunteer, you are not a staff of the organization, however, you have the right to always ask questions or draw the attention of the KDCF team whenever you are confused or feel aggrieved by filing a complaint to the volunteer program manager, as KDCF prioritizes the wellbeing, learning, and overall personal development of its volunteers.

Your responsibilities as a KDCF volunteer

  • Abide by laid down rules, volunteer guidelines, procedures and processes;
  • Comply with your terms of references and job description;
  • Be in regular contact with the project leaders and the communities;
  • Alert the volunteer manager or project coordinator in problematic or emergency cases;
  • Be reliable, honest, responsible, act appropriately and set a good example to others when volunteering;
  • Ensure Professionalism, Accountability, and serve the best interest of the KDC Foundation and the project communities;
  • Provide requisite skills, be available and punctual, protect classified information and the sanctity of intellectual property & information of the KDC Foundation and its project communities;
  • Accept guidance and support from the volunteer manager;
  • Be willing to learn and participate in trainings, meetings, retreats and all relevant activities within the volunteer period; and
  • Maintain and respect the KDC Foundation’s data protection and confidentiality policies.

Categories of KDCF Volunteers

  • Tutoring (Rural Learning Centers): This requires one to teach one or more of the selected subjects in the Rural Learning and Skills Development Centers. This assignment requires technical skills and at least a National Certificate of Education or its equivalent in the preferred subject area, and professional teaching experience.
  • Tutoring (Urban Learning Centres): This requires one to teach one or more of the selected subjects for Tsangaya Schools. This assignment requires technical skills and at least a National Certificate of Education or its equivalent in the preferred subject area, and professional teaching experience.
  • Supervision: This category involves visiting our centres, which can be a Tsagaya School in the Urban area or learning and skills development centres in the rural areas to check the processes of programme delivery, punctuality of the tutors and students, level of compliance of the host communities including the recipients of the programme. Person responsible for this task will be guided through different reporting templates and may be required to report to the office or upload their findings via the foundation’s online platform (Website). Secondary schools’ certificate with minimum knowledge of technology is required to be accepted for this task.
  • Sensitization and advocacy: This task is designed for clerics, journalists, social media influencers and any other person whose interest is to speak about the foundation’s reform programmes, thus educating both local communities such as parents and the alarammas (Tsangaya Schools Teachers), leaders, professionals, and any other relevant stakeholder on the need for the reform.
  • Bloggers/Vloggers: This task requires one to be a professional blogger who is willing to publish their essays and other contents on the foundation’s website and their own platforms. This task requires you to submit your essays and contents that are relevant to education for the unskilled youths, or problems and solutions to menace facing the Almajirci education system in northern Nigeria. You may be using other Muslim countries’ successful models for your analysis and assertions.
  • Mentor: This assignment is for experienced and trusted advisers, professionals, and accomplished individuals who are available to support and advise our program beneficiaries in a way that makes sense to them (the beneficiaries).

What are my Benefits as a KDCF volunteer?

As a KDCF volunteer, you are not entitled to a salary, however, the foundation will provide you with any necessary resources needed to deliver your assigned tasks. As a volunteer you are entitled to:

  • A certificate which indicates that you are a serving or worked as a volunteer for the foundation.
  • An ID card to enable you properly identify yourself at your volunteering site.
  • A branded shirt and hat if required.
